SMS API vs SMS gateway vs bulk SMS: what is the difference?
Checked:
SMS API vs SMS gateway vs bulk SMS: An SMS API is the interface your code uses to send or receive a text message. An SMS gateway is the service or device that takes that request and hands the message to a mobile network. Bulk SMS means sending the same or similar text to many recipients at once, usually through a gateway with a sender ID.
Example
One send, three terms
After an order is paid, an online shop calls POST /gateway/send-sms (that is the SMS API). The request reaches an SMS gateway, which passes the message to a carrier: a bulk gateway through a direct carrier link, smsportal.app through an Android phone with a SIM card. When the same shop sends a promotion to 20,000 customers at once, that is bulk SMS.
Side by side
| Term | What it is | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| SMS API | how you give the order: URL, key, request format | developers, shops, CRMs, n8n, AI agents |
| SMS gateway | the middleman between your software and the mobile network | anyone sending texts automatically |
| Bulk SMS | a kind of sending: many recipients at once | marketing, mass alerts |
Kinds of SMS gateway
Most gateways offer an SMS API, but they deliver messages in different ways:
- Bulk (aggregator) gateway: connects straight to the carrier’s message center, usually over SMPP, supports sender IDs and thousands of messages a minute, and charges per message.
- Phone-based gateway: an Android phone with a SIM card sends texts from your own number, recipients can reply, and the cost is your mobile plan. Good for notifications and conversations, not for campaigns to thousands of numbers.
- Email-to-SMS gateway: turns an email sent to an address like number@carrier into a text; simple, but with no delivery reports and no control over the sender.
Which one do you need?
For marketing campaigns to thousands of numbers, use bulk SMS from an aggregator. For confirmations, reminders and conversations where you want replies and no per-message fee, a phone-based gateway with an SMS API, such as smsportal.app, is enough.
