Should you use Twilio or smsportal.app?
Use Twilio for high-volume, regulated or international messaging, short codes, sender IDs and guaranteed throughput. Use smsportal.app for reminders, notifications, alerts and conversations at a few hundred to a few thousand messages a month: texts go out from your own SIM, replies come back to the same number, and you pay a flat plan from $0 instead of per-segment, carrier and 10DLC fees.

What do 300, 3,000 and 10,000 US SMS a month cost?
Single-segment SMS to US numbers. Twilio: $0.0083 per outbound segment plus carrier fees of $0.0035–$0.005, one local number at $1.15 a month, from twilio.com on 28 October 2026. Not included: the one-time 10DLC brand fee ($4.50–$46) and $15 campaign vetting, plus $1.50–$10 a month per campaign. smsportal.app: plan price; your carrier bills the texts, and many US plans include unlimited texting.
| Messages a month | smsportal.app | Twilio |
|---|---|---|
| 300 | $0 (Free) | $4.69–$5.14 + 10DLC campaign fee |
| 3,000 | $9.99 (Pro) | $36.55–$41.05 + 10DLC campaign fee |
| 10,000 | $24.99 (Unlimited) | $119.15–$134.15 + 10DLC campaign fee |
Twilio also bills inbound messages ($0.0083 per segment) and $0.001 for each failed message; long or Unicode texts use more segments. Unlimited texting on consumer and small-business mobile plans is meant for person-to-person use, so check your carrier’s terms before sending automated messages from a SIM.
Which to choose
When Twilio is the better choice
- You send tens of thousands of messages a day or need guaranteed throughput.
- You need a short code, toll-free number or alphanumeric sender ID.
- You message many countries and want one provider for all of them.
- You also need WhatsApp, voice, email or verification APIs from the same vendor.
- Your compliance team requires a registered A2P sender, contracts and an SLA.
When smsportal.app is the better choice
- You send a few hundred to a few thousand messages a month and want a flat price.
- Customers should see your real number and be able to reply or call back.
- Your messages are low-volume, consented and conversational, so a registered A2P sender is more than you need.
- You connect texting to an AI agent (Claude, Cursor) through an MCP server that can actually send.
- You are a small team, clinic, shop or side project that does not need enterprise contracts.
How to move a Twilio integration to smsportal.app
The request is similar: a recipient and a message. smsportal.app takes JSON with an API key header, takes a list of recipients, and has no `From` field because the sender is your SIM.
- Create an smsportal.app account and install the Android app on a phone with a SIM.
- Pair the phone with the QR code and create an API key.
- Map
Totorecipients(an array) andBodytomessage; dropFrom. - Replace Twilio’s StatusCallback with an smsportal.app webhook for
MESSAGE_SENT,MESSAGE_DELIVERED,MESSAGE_FAILEDandMESSAGE_RECEIVED. - Test with a few numbers, then switch the traffic that suits a phone (reminders, alerts, replies).

Is there a cheaper Twilio alternative for small volume?
Yes. An Android SMS gateway such as smsportal.app sends through your own SIM, so there is no per-message fee from the gateway: 3,000 messages a month cost $9.99 for the Pro plan plus your carrier plan, against about $37–$41 on Twilio before 10DLC fees (prices as of 28 October 2026).
Does smsportal.app need A2P 10DLC registration?
smsportal.app sends from your own SIM over your carrier’s normal network, so there is no 10DLC registration step. It is not a way around the rules: carriers filter automated and unsolicited traffic from SIMs. Use it for low-volume, consented, two-way messages; for campaigns or volume, use a registered sender.
Can smsportal.app replace Twilio for OTP codes?
For a small app or internal tool, yes: codes arrive from a normal number within seconds while the phone is online. For a large consumer login flow, use a provider with guaranteed delivery and fallback, such as Twilio Verify.
Does Twilio have an MCP server that sends SMS?
Twilio’s official MCP server (public beta) only searches Twilio documentation. Sending from an AI agent needs the Twilio Labs alpha package, which Twilio support does not cover. smsportal.app’s MCP server sends and reads SMS and is open source.
How many messages can one phone send?
With the default 5-second gap, about 720 an hour. Add more phones to spread the load; no plan limits the number of phones.
