A scale with coins and a phone – comparing the cost of sending SMS

"How much does Twilio SMS cost?" has a short answer and a longer, more useful one. The short answer is about $0.0083 per US segment. The longer one adds carrier fees, number rental, 10DLC registration and inbound messages, and at small volume those extras are most of the bill. This guide builds the real formula, runs it for 300 to 10,000 texts a month, and compares it with other providers and with an own-SIM gateway.

How is a Twilio SMS bill calculated?

Your monthly cost is segments sent times the per-segment rate, plus carrier fees, plus number rental, plus registration, plus inbound messages. Each part is small, but they stack.

A simple formula for outbound US texting:

monthly cost ≈ segments × (base rate + carrier fee) + number rental + registration fees + inbound segments × inbound rate

Parts of the formula:

  1. Base rate. Twilio lists $0.0083 per segment for outbound and inbound on long codes, toll-free and short codes (Twilio US SMS pricing, as of October 2026).
  2. Carrier fee. Added per segment by the carrier, for example $0.0035 (AT&T), $0.0045 (T-Mobile) and $0.005 (Verizon) outbound, same source.
  3. Number rental. About $1.15 a month for a leased local number and about $2.15 for toll-free. Short codes are far more: about $1,000 per quarter for a random one.
  4. Registration. A2P 10DLC registration fees for US long codes, covered below.
  5. Inbound. Replies are billed per segment, too.

What is a segment, and why does it multiply the price?

A segment is the billing unit: up to 160 characters in GSM-7, or 70 characters if the text uses UCS-2 (emoji or many accented characters). Long texts are split into more segments, so a 200-character message costs two segments.

Examples:

  • "Hi Sam, your table is booked for 7 PM. Reply C to cancel." is one segment, about 58 characters.
  • A 300-character order update is two segments in GSM-7, and three if it contains an emoji and switches to UCS-2.

Practical consequence: shorten texts and avoid emoji if cost matters. The same rule applies on every provider.

What do 10DLC fees add?

If you send business texts from a local US 10-digit number, you must register a brand and a campaign (A2P 10DLC). Twilio's fees include roughly $4.50 one time for brand registration, about $15 for campaign vetting, and $1.50–$10 a month per campaign depending on type; Standard brands also pay a $41.50 secondary vetting fee (Twilio support article, reported updated in August 2025; check the current page).

For a small business that is roughly $20–$60 up front and $2–$10 a month, about the same size as the message cost itself at low volume. Registration also takes time: Twilio has said approvals can take two to three weeks in busy periods. Read the full explanation in Do you need 10DLC?.

What does it cost at 300, 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 texts?

At 1,000 outbound segments Twilio's messages cost about $12–$13 a month, before the number ($1.15) and registration. At 10,000 it is about $118–$133. These are worked from the published rates above.

Outbound segments per monthMessages (base $0.0083 + carrier $0.0035–$0.005)Plus number rentalTypical monthly total (before 10DLC monthly fee)
300$3.54–$3.99$1.15about $4.70–$5.15
1,000$11.80–$13.30$1.15about $13–$14.50
3,000$35.40–$39.90$1.15about $36.50–$41
10,000$118–$133$1.15about $119–$134

Our calculation, as of October 2026. Excludes inbound replies, taxes, one-time registration and the campaign monthly fee ($1.50–$10). If customers reply to each text, inbound segments roughly add another $0.0083 plus fees each.

How do Telnyx, Plivo and Vonage compare?

On public pages Telnyx lists the lowest base rate of the three, then Plivo, with carrier fees broadly similar. Savings versus Twilio are real but modest at low volume.

ProviderUS SMS base rate per segmentLocal number per monthExample: 1,000 outbound segments
Twilioabout $0.0083about $1.15about $11.80–$13.30
Telnyxabout $0.004 (local/10DLC)about $1.00about $7.50–$9.00
Plivoabout $0.0077about $0.50about $11.20–$12.70
Vonageabout $0.0086 (unverified)about $1.05 (unverified)about $12.10–$13.60 (unverified)
SMSAPI.plabout €0.035 to the US (€0.036 Poland, €0.040 UK), outbound onlyn/aabout €35 (1,000 × €0.035)

Sources: SMSAPI (euro price list, as of October 2026; it shows one rate per network and no separate carrier fee), Twilio, Telnyx, Plivo, Vonage. As of October 2026, before carrier fees where noted. Vonage numbers are from secondary sources because the vendor page returned an error when we checked. Telnyx's 10DLC fees are not stated on its pricing page, so ask before you commit. For a wider view, see Twilio alternatives for low volume.

How does multi-segment math change the bill?

A text is split into segments by character count, and the count depends on the encoding. In GSM-7 a single message holds 160 characters, but once it is longer, each part carries only 153 because of the header that stitches the parts together. In UCS-2 (emoji, many accented or non-Latin letters) it is 70 characters for one message and 67 per part when concatenated.

Message lengthGSM-7 segmentsUCS-2 segments
up to 160 / up to 70 characters11 (up to 70)
161–306 / 71–134 characters22
307–459 / 135–201 characters33

Worked example. 1,000 appointment texts of about 120 characters cost 1,000 segments in GSM-7, but 2,000 segments if one emoji pushes them to UCS-2. At Twilio's roughly $0.012–$0.013 per segment (base plus carrier fee), that is about $12–$13 versus about $24–$27. Same people, same words, double the bill.

Do inbound messages cost money too?

Yes. Twilio lists the same $0.0083 per segment for inbound as for outbound on US long codes and toll-free numbers, and Plivo charges its rate in each direction (Twilio, Plivo, as of October 2026). Carrier fees for inbound vary by carrier and are lower than outbound for some, as Telnyx's carrier table shows.

If every outbound text gets a reply, you roughly double the segment count. For a two-way reminder flow at 1,000 outbound texts and 600 replies, count about 1,600 billable segments, not 1,000. This is where an own-SIM gateway differs most: replies arrive as ordinary incoming texts on your plan and appear in the dashboard, the API and webhooks.

What is the full monthly total including number rental and 10DLC?

For a small US sender on Twilio, the complete monthly cost is messages plus number rental plus the 10DLC campaign monthly fee, with registration as a one-time extra. The table assumes 20% replies and one segment per text.

Outbound texts per monthMessages incl. 20% replies (Twilio, mid carrier fee ~$0.0128)Number rental10DLC campaign monthly (low-volume mixed ~$1.50)Monthly totalOne-time registration (brand ~$4.50 + vetting ~$15)
300~$4.60$1.15$1.50~$7.25~$19.50
1,000~$15.40$1.15$1.50~$18.05~$19.50
3,000~$46.10$1.15$1.50~$48.75~$19.50
10,000~$153.60$1.15$1.50~$156.25~$19.50

Our calculation, as of October 2026, from the rates cited above. Inbound is approximated at the same per-segment cost as outbound including carrier fees. Standard brands pay more (a monthly campaign fee up to $10 and a $41.50 vetting fee). Taxes are excluded.

Outbound-only comparison with SMSAPI.pl

SMSAPI.pl, a Polish wholesale provider, publishes a euro price list per country: about €0.035 per SMS to the US, €0.036 to Poland and €0.040 to the UK (as of October 2026, smsapi.com), with a €30 minimum payment. Outbound only, one segment each, before any registration you may need for US traffic:

Outbound SMS per monthSMSAPI.pl to the US (~€0.035)SMSAPI.pl to Poland (~€0.036)Twilio to the US (~$0.012–$0.013 incl. carrier fee)
300~€10.50~€10.80~$3.54–$3.99
1,000~€35~€36~$11.80–$13.30
3,000~€105~€108~$35.40–$39.90
10,000~€350~€360~$118–$133

Our calculation. Euro and dollar figures are not converted. SMSAPI's list is a worldwide price list, so the US rate is more than Twilio's all-in US rate here, while for Poland and Europe it is the natural choice. Its Polish domestic price list is in zloty, see Ile kosztuje wysyłka SMS for that.

What does an own-SIM gateway cost for comparison?

An own-SIM gateway has no per-message fee. You pay your mobile plan, which often includes unlimited texts, and a smsportal plan, starting with a free plan. See the pricing section for current plans.

smsportal Android app dashboard with monthly usage (Polish UI)

So at 1,000 messages a month the difference is roughly $12–$13 in messages, plus number rental and registration if you were on Twilio. At 10,000 texts the cost of a hosted API is $75–$133, but a single phone sends only about 720 messages an hour at the default 5-second delay, so volume needs to be spread out or shared across devices.

Be honest about the trade-offs:

  • Good: two-way messages from your real number, no per-segment fee, quick setup, AI and MCP access.
  • Not good: no alphanumeric sender ID, not for bulk marketing, no SLA, and carriers may filter automated traffic from a personal SIM. In the US this includes the A2P rules in the 10DLC guide.

For setup, see SMS API without Twilio.

What is the cheapest option for my volume?

Match the tool to the job. Conversational and low-volume messaging favours an own SIM, while campaigns, compliance and global reach favour a hosted provider.

A few thousand transactional texts, US-only, registered businessTelnyx or Plivo, or own SIM if replies matter

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to send an SMS with Twilio?

In the US, Twilio lists about $0.0083 per segment plus carrier fees of about $0.0035–$0.005, so roughly $0.012–$0.013 per outbound segment (as of October 2026). Add about $1.15 a month for a local number and A2P 10DLC registration fees. Inbound texts are billed too.

Is Twilio SMS free?

No. Twilio SMS is pay-as-you-go. A trial account provides limited credit for testing, but sending real traffic costs per segment, plus carrier fees and number rental.

What are Twilio carrier fees?

Carrier fees are per-message surcharges that US carriers charge on top of the provider's base rate. Twilio lists examples of $0.0035 for AT&T, $0.0045 for T-Mobile and $0.005 for Verizon on outbound SMS (as of October 2026). They vary by carrier and by message direction.

How much does A2P 10DLC registration cost?

Twilio's published fees include a one-time brand registration of about $4.50, a campaign vetting fee of about $15, and campaign monthly fees from about $1.50 to $10 depending on type, with a $41.50 secondary vetting fee for Standard brands. Fees were reported updated in August 2025, so check Twilio's current article.

What counts as one SMS segment?

A segment holds up to 160 characters in GSM-7 encoding. If a text contains characters outside GSM-7, such as emoji or many accented letters, it uses UCS-2 and a segment holds only 70 characters. Longer messages are split and billed per segment.

Is there a cheaper way to send a few hundred texts a month?

For low volume and two-way conversation, an Android phone with your own SIM and a gateway like smsportal has no per-message fee, only your mobile plan and a smsportal plan. It has no sender ID and is not meant for bulk marketing.
